Annual American Composers Update

Katherine Hoover

SAI member Katherine Hoover is a New York, NY resident. The National Flute Association has invited her to be its composer in residence for its convention in Phoenix in summer 1998. In fall 1996 she spoke, attended master classes, and heard performances of her work at the College of Notre Dame, in Baltimore; Meredith College; the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and the University of California at Berkeley. In September 1996 Hoover traveled to West Virginia for the first showing of New Music, a video by Deborah Novak about the commissioning, rehearsing, and the Kennedy Center premiere of Dances and Variations, for flute and harp. The Press-Democrat reviewer wrote that the premiere of Stitch-te Naku was "the highlight of the program." She was a performer at the National Flute Convention, in New York, NY, Aug. 1996.

Premieres

Stitch-te Naku received its first performance, with cellist Sharon Robinson and the Rohnert Park (CA) Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Nan Washburn, Oct. 12-13, 1996. At the National Flute Convention, held in Chicago, Aug. 1997, Jeffrey Khaner, principal flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, presented Winter Spirits, for solo flute.

Performances

Other works heard at the 1997 National Flute Convention included Medieval Suite, Canyon Echos, and Kokopeli. Works performed at the 1996 National Flute Convention were Dances and Variations, commissioned by the New York and Long Island Flute Clubs, with Wendell Dobbs and Mary Tryer; and Three for Eight, with Hoover conducting. Under the baton of Apo Tzu, The Women's Philharmonic presented Two Sketches, March 1997. Trio, on the program of several Eroica Trio concerts this season, will be played by an Indiana University of Pennsylvania faculty trio in February 1998. Stitch-te-Naku received a performance from the Santa Monica (CA) Symphony, with cellist Timothy Landauer and conductor Allan Gross.
