Annual American Composers Update

Roger C. Vogel

Roger C. Vogel resides in Athens, GA, where he serves as Professor of Music in theory and composition at the University of Georgia. His article, "Harmonic Progression in Milhaud: A Model for Instruction," appears in Music Theory Explorations and Applications, Vol. V (1996). In 1997 the Epsilon Lambda chapter of Phi Mu Alpha commissioned Fanfares and Flourishes for The Georgia Brass.

Premieres

At The College Music Society (CMS) Southern Chapter Conference, held at Mississippi University for Women, in Columbus, MS, Lana Johns, flute and Karen Garrison, alto flute, premiered Sirens, Feb. 23, 1996. Heard first at the University of Georgia were Exhultations, with Kathleen Bennett, Sally McManus, and Anna Werts, flutes, and Amy Harmatuk, alto flute (Mar. 14, 1996); The Guitarist's Day, with guitarist Michael Huff (May 15, 1996); Winter Sun, with Christine Johnson, flute, and Kyle Dawkins, guitar (May 27, 1996); Oboe, with Gregory Broughton, voice and Dwight Manning, oboe (Nov. 12, 1996); and Fanfares and Flourishes, for three antiphonal brass quintets, with The Georgia Brass (Oct. 20, 1997). In 1997 Edward P. Sandor, trumpet, and Thomas McCutchen, percussion, introduced Voyages at the CMS Southern Chapter Meeting, held at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL (Feb. 13-15); and then played the same work at the Southeastern Composers League Forum at Radford (VA) University (Apr. 24-26).

Performances

Lawrence Gwozdz and Andrea Sokol-Albert presented Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano at Western Illinois University, in Macomb, Oct. 21, 1996. Kenneth L. Broadway directed the University of South Dakota Percussion Ensemble in Temporal Landscape Number 3, in Vermillion, SD, Nov. 19, 1996. As part of the Concerto delCasino Concert Series in Voghera, Italy, Mar. 26, 1997, Massimo Pezzuti sang "Of Celebration," from The Devil's Songbook, with Milton Masciadri, bass viol, and Angiolina Sensale, piano. The TGIF Chamber Concert Series in Ashland, Oregon, included Night Winds, with Kenton Gould, oboe; Penny Austin, flute; Rhett Bender, clarinet; Walker Kermode, bassoon; Cindy Hutton, French horn; and Angel McDonald, saxophone, May 15, 1997.
