Annual American Composers Update
Samuel Adler
SAI National Arts Associate Samuel Adler will be teaching
at the Juilliard School of Music, in New York, NY, during
the 1997-98 season.
Premieres
On Aug. 10, 1997, Thomas Stacy gave the first performance
of
Canto XV, for solo English horn in New York,
NY. John Sampan and Marilyn Shrude premiered
Pensive
Soliloquy, for saxophone and piano, in Valencia, Spain,
Sept. 25, 1997.
Serenata Concertante, for flute,
oboe, clarinet, bassoon, solo saxophone, and wind ensemble,
was presented by the Bowling Green State University Wind
Ensemble, led by Bruce Mass, and faculty soloists, Nov.
21, 1997, to be followed by performances by the other
12 wind ensembles that commissioned it, including Northwestern
University, University of Texas, University of Illinois,
University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, Western Michigan
University, Michigan State University, Louisiana State
University, Syracuse University, University of Southern
Mississippi, and Central College. During February 1997,
A Psalm Trilogy, for
a cappella SATB choir,
was heard first at ACDA regional conventions in cities
including Providence, RI and Detroit, MI. The University
of Southern Mississippi chorus, led by Tim Koch, introduced
My Beloved is Mine for
a cappella SATB choir,
January 1999. On July 6, 1997, a California Music Teachers
Convention program featured the premiere of Adler's
Second
Piano Concerto.
Performances
Symphony No. 1 received a performance at the University
of Toledo, May 1, 1997. In 1997 the Toledo Trio played
Trio No. 1 in Cleveland (Apr. 16) and Toledo (May
2). Heard at the Brevard(NC) Music Center in July 1997
were
Summer Stock and
The Fixed Desire of the
Human Heart, for orchestra;
Concertino, for
string orchestra; and
Double Visions,
Southwestern
Sketches, and
A Little Night and Day Music,
for wind ensemble. Kenneth Schermerhorn conducted the
Nashville Symphony Orchestra in
Centennial, Apr.
4-5, 1997. Barry Snyder soloed in Adler's
First Piano
Concerto with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, under
David Itkin, Nov. 15, 1997.
