Annual American Composers Update
Walter S. Hartley
Walter S. Hartley is Professor Emeritus and Composer in
Residence at the SUNY College at Fredonia School of Music.
Black Squirrel Music has published his band arrangement
of Walter Watson's
Presidential Portraits. In 1997
in honor of his 70th birthday, concerts took place in
Yerevan, Armenia (Feb. 27) and East Carolina University,
Greenville, NC (Mar. 3-4). Also in 1997 he was guest pianist/composer
at the Rascher Saxophone Quartet Workshop, held at the
University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg (June
22-27); and at the Transylvania University Saxophone Institute,
Lexington, KY (July 21-27). Scheduled for a 1998 release
is a Tokyo Kosei Publishing Company recording of
Centennial
Symphony (1995), with the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra,
of Japan, led by Frederick Fennell.
Premieres
On Feb. 24, 1997, Grant Cooper led Fred Boyd and the Ithaca
College Chamber Orchestra in the first performance of
Concerto Breve, for bass trombone and small orchestra
(1995). The East Carolina University faculty saxophone
quartet presented
Quartet, for alto saxophones
(1996), Mar. 4, 1997. In 1997 premieres at SUNY College
at Fredonia included
Intrada (1996), for eight
euphoniums (Apr. 15);
Sinfonia No. 11, with the
Fredonia College Symphony, under Russel Mikkelson (Apr.
19); and
Duo Sonata (1997), with T. Burdick, soprano
saxophone and D. DeAngelis, baritone (May 1). The Transylvania
University Saxophone Institute Ensemble, conducted by
Mark Taggart, introduced
Music for 12 Saxophones
(1997), July 27, 1997, in Lexington, KY.
Performances
Heard at SUNY College at Fredonia in 1997 were
Trio
(1984) and
Octet (1975), both for saxophones (Apr.
3); and
Two Pieces (1976), for euphonium and piano,
on M. Morrissey's graduation recital (Apr. 13). On June
27, 1997, a Rascher Saxophone Quartet Workshop ensemble,
led by Bruce Weinberger, played
Overture, Interlude
and Scherzo (1988).
