Annual American Composers Update
Alice A. Moerk
Alice A. Moerk, Professor of Music
at Fairmont (WV) State College, maintains a studio
in Anna Maria, FL as well as at her home in Fairmont.
She has recently returned from sabbatical leave, including
participating in the Deep Listening Retreat in Las
Vegas, NM with composer Pauline Oliveros. In Apr.
1999, she will be the featured composer at the SAI
Epsilon Psi Chapter Composer Showcase, at Fairmont
College.
Premieres
Alianor, an opera in monologue,
was introduced by mezzo-soprano Carolyn Sheets and
instrumentalists at High Gate, in Fairmont, Mar. 1998.
John Robinson directed the Frederick, MD concert band
in the first performance of Harbour Symphony,
June 1998. In Oct. 1998, soprano Sandy Beveridge presented
Wedding Song in Paden City, WV. Premieres scheduled
for the Apr. 1999 SAI Epsilon Psi Composer Showcase
are song cycles Auntie, with soprano Janet
Gilmer and pianist Jeriel Gilmer; and Don Quix,
for mezzo-soprano Sheets, clarinettist Harry Faulk,
guitarist John Vaughan, and the composer playing strings.
Performances
Also on the SAI Composer Showcase
are Eternal Summer, for SATB choir and instruments,
conducted by Jeffrey Poland; and Trumpet Fanfare,
for trumpet and organ. Moerck's organ work O'Carolan's
Recess was heard in 1998 in Paden City.
