Annual American Composers Update
Dinos Constantinides
Head of Composition and Boyd Professor of Music at Louisiana
State University (LSU), in Baton Rouge, Dinos Constantinides
also serves as music director and conductor of the Louisiana
Sinfonietta. In 1998, he was guest composer at the Ioannina
(Greece) Festival of Music (July 9-12), and featured composer
at the Mykonos International Music Festival, with six
concerts including his music (Sept. 1-10). He received
his 21st ASCAP award. From May 15, 1998 through June 21,
1999, the Louisiana Sinfonietta is producing a Festival
of Hellenic Music, with many performances of his works,
culminating in programs at Weill Recital Hall, New York,
NY (May-June 1999).
Premieres
The Armonic Brass Quintet of the Black Sea Philharmonic,
of Romania, commissioned and premiered
New Orleans
Divertimento, for brass quintet and orchestra, in
Constanta (June 16, 1998), with a repeat performance in
Sibiu (Sept. 24, 1998). In 1998,
Dreams, Earth and
Heavens, commissioned by the American Guild of Organists,
premiered in its organ version, in Rochester, NY (Jan.
25); and in its version for soprano, reader, and organ,
in Baton Rouge (Sept. 6).
Performances
In 1998, Trio Verdher played
Trio No. III at the
Philips Gallery, in Washington (Mar. 1); and then toured
with it in Athens, Greece (Mar. 12), Corfu, Greece (Mar.
18), and Cyprus (twice on Mar. 14).
Transformations
for Oboe was heard on Mark Weiger's summer 1997 tour
of the Far and Middle East; and at a Weill Recital Hall
recital, May 27, 1998. In England,
Rhapsody for Flute
and Piano received performances in London and at Brookland
College, May 7-8, 1998. At the Myconos International Festival,
the Elysium String Quartet presented
Preludes for String
Quartet six times, Sept.-Oct. 1998. Works heard in
Baton Rouge in 1998 included
Midnight Song, at
the LSU Festival of Contemporary Music (Mar. 15);
Composition
for Strings, with the Louisiana Sinfonietta (Sept.
13); and
Fantasia for Solo Flute, Rhapsody for Flute,
and
Transformations for Clarinet, all with the
Louisiana Sinfonietta (Oct. 15).
