Annual American Composers Update

David Ward-Steinman

David Ward-Steinman is Professor of Music and Composer-in-Residence at San Diego State University (SDSU). In 1998, he wrote a chapter in Teaching Excellence, Michael Flachmann, editor; and appeared in Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Twentieth-Century Classical Musicians, by Nicholas Slonimsky; The History of American Classical Music -- MacDowell Through Minimalism, by John Warthen Struble; The Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music, Don Michael Randel, editor; and Who's Who in America. He had recent residencies, performances, and lectures in Hong Kong, San Diego, Australia, New Zealand, Florida, and Colorado. In July 1998, the Moravian (Czech Republic) Philharmonic Orchestra recorded Cello Concerto, Cinnabar Concerto, Chroma Concerto, and Elegy for Astronauts, with Howard Colf, cello; Karen Elaine, viola; Ward-Steinman, Loie Flood, and Patrice Madura, keyboards; and John Flood, percussion.

Premieres

In May 1998, the chamber version of Perelandra, a double concerto, for two violins, piano/celeste, and percussion, premiered in La Jolla, CA, with Anna and Bracha Malkin, Eduard Laurel, and John Flood. SDSU premieres were Centennial Song, for soloists, chorus, and piano, with the Aztec Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, led by Frank Almond, and Ward-Steinman, piano; Gemini III, with Momilani Ramstrum, guitar, and Ward-Steinman, synthesizer; and San Dan Diego State: Centennial Song (solo version), with Martin Chambers, voice, and Steinman, piano, all in Nov. 1996; and Cinnabar (new version), for viola, percussion, and piano, with Elaine, John Flood, and Ward-Steinman, Sept. 1998. In Nov. 1996 at California State University at Dominguez Hills, Ward-Steinman presented Birthday Improvisation on the Notes in Elliott Schwart'z Name, for piano. The California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT)/MTNA convention, Jan. 1996 in San Diego, included David Burge introducing Prisms and Reflections, for piano and piano interior (1996), a CAPMT commission.

Performances

1998 College Music Society meetings featured Night Winds (Woodwind Quintet No. 2), with Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music faculty and students, at the annual convention, in San Juan (Oct.); and Sonata for Piano Fortified, with Ward-Steinman, at the Pacific Southern Chapter meeting, in Tucson (Mar.). In May 1998, Janis L. McKay and I-fen Peng played Childs Play, for bassoon and piano, at The Ohio State University. Delores Stevens performed Third Piano Sonata at Palomar College, San Marcos, Nov. 1996, and in The Czech Republic, summer 1997. Heard at SDSU were Sonata for Piano Fortified, choreographed by Melissa Nunn, Nov. 1997; and Prisms and Reflections, with the composer, Mar. 1998. Other San Diego performances were Intersections II: 'Borobudur', with John Flood, percussion, and the composer, fortified piano, at the International New Music Festival, Oct. 1997, and the Lyceum Theatre, Jan. 1999; and The Tale of Issoumbochi, for narrator, soprano, flute, clarinet, cello, percussion, piano, and celeste, by the International Chamber Players, under the composer, eight times in fall 1997.
