Annual American Composers Update

H. Owen Reed

SAI National Arts Associate H. Owen Reed has moved to Green Valley, AZ. In July 1998, he completed scoring UT RE MI, originally for orchestra, for wind ensemble. The Sept. 1998 issue of The Instrumentalist included "A Conversation with H. Owen Reed," by Peter Loel Boonshaft, and "An Interpretative Analysis of La Fiesta Mexicana," by John Knight.

Performances

On Mar. 18, 1997, the Green Valley Community Church choir, conducted by the composer, sang Michigan Morn. Ben Hawkins led the Transylvania University Concert Band in "Carnival" from La Fiesta Mexicana, Nov. 8, 1997 in Lexington, KY. On Oct. 31, 1997, the Grand Ledge (MI) Wind Symphony, under Michael Kaufman, played La Fiesta Mexicana and For the Unfortunate. The Grand Ledge Wind Symphony and the Hayes Choir, directed by Kaufman and James Carey, presented For the Unfortunate, May 15, 1998. A Central Michigan University performance, John Williams, conductor, included The Heart of the Morn, Nov. 16, 1997 in Mt. Pleasant, MI.
