Jack Gallagher
SAI National Arts Associate Jack Gallagher lives in Wooster,
OH. A CD of his
Toccata for Brass Quintet, with
the U.S. Air Force Heartland Brass Quintet, is forthcoming.
Recently, his works broadcast on classical radio stations
included the Air Force Band of Flight CD recording of
Proteus Rising from the Sea, Lt. Col. Richard A.
Shelton, Commander and Conductor, over WCLV-FM, Cleveland
(Jan. 17 and July 18, 1998); the Vienna Modern Masters
CD recording of
The Persistence of Memory (In Memoriam:
Brian Israel), with the Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra,
Tsanko Delibozov, conductor, over WQLN-FRM, Erie, PA (Mar.
30, 1998) and over WCLV-FM, Cleveland (June 27, 1998);
the Vienna Modern Masters CD recording of
Berceuse,
with the Polish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra
of Krakow, Szymon Kawalla, conductor, and the Musical
Heritage Society CD recording of
Toccata for Brass
Quintet, with the Galliard Brass Ensemble, over WQLN-FM,
Erie (Apr. 16 and June 1998); and
Exotic Dances,
with Thomas Wood, violin, and Brian Dykstra, piano, over
WCLV-FM, Cleveland (Feb. 23, 1998 and Aug. 23, 1998).
New York Philharmonic trumpeters Robert Sullivan and Ken
DeCarlo played
Cappricio as part of a recital/master
class in Taiwan in June 1998 during the orchestra's 1998
Asian tour.
Premieres
In 1998,
A Psalm of Life, commissioned by the Fairmont
(OH) Band Boosters, received its premiere performances
from the Fairmont High School Symphonic Band, Ryan Borger,
conductor (Feb. 1); and from the Wooster Scot Symphonic
Band, Gallagher, guest conductor, at The College of Wooster
(Apr. 26). Commissioned for the fifth anniversary of the
Wayne Center for the Arts Children's Chorus, directed
by Marilyn Rossiter,
Song of the Daffodils (text
by Wordsworth) was heard first in 1998, at Dalton (OH)
High School (May 2-3); and at Benton St. Baptist Church,
in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada (May 23).
Performances
The Indiana University Wind Ensemble, Ray Cramer, Music
Director, presented
Proteus Rising from the Sea
at the 1998 National Conference of the Society of Composers,
Inc., at Indiana University, Apr. 16, 1998. The Northern
Brass Quintet, the faculty ensemble-in-residence at the
University of Northern Iowa, performed
Celebration
and Reflection in 1997 at Sinsinawa Mound Center (Nov.
22), St. Norbert College (Nov. 23), and Lawrence University
(Nov. 24). On Sept. 25, 1997, a program at James Madison
University featured the Madison Brass Quintet in
Toccata
for Brass Quintet. In 1998, after playing "Intrada",
from
Diversions: Triptych for Symphonic Band at
the College of Wooster (Feb. 1 and Mar. 5), the school's
Scot Symphonic Band, led by Nancy Ditmer, included the
work on its spring Midwestern tour (Mar. 7-13). Other
works heard at the College of Wooster included
The

Berceuse, with the Wooster Symphony Orchestra,
under Gallagher, Feb. 15, 1998; and
Ancient Evenings
and Distant Music, with the Solaris Wind Quintet,
