Annual American Composers Update
James Mobberly
James Mobberley, of Liberty, MO, serves as Professor of
Music at the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC)
Conservatory of Music, and as Composer-in-Residence with
the Kansas City (MO) Symphony. In addition, he holds new
appointments as Composer-in-Residence with the New Ear
Ensemble, Kansas City, MO, and as Visiting Adjunct Professor
of Composition at Indiana University for the 1998 fall
semester. The New Ear Ensemble has commissioned a work
for cello and chamber ensemble to premiere with Yehuda
Hanani on Mar. 13, 1999.
Premieres
Gary Hill led the UMKC Wind Ensemble in the first performance
of
Edges, Sept. 29, 1998. On Oct. 29, 1998,
Strap
on Your Lobster, for trumpet and tape (Movement 1
of
Icarus Wept) was introduced by Keith Benjamin
in Kansas City. Laurence Kaptain, Marimba Yajalon, and
the University of New Mexico Wind Ensemble, conducted
by Glenn Adsit, will present
Concerto for Marimba (Eight
Hands) and Wind Ensemble in Albuquerque Feb. 24, 1999.
Heard first at the University of Kansas, in Lawrence,
was
Trelugue, Peccatas, and Feuds, for organ, with
James Higdon, Oct. 30, 1997. All works were commissioned
by the performers.
Performances
Kaptain and Yajalon performed
Concerto for Marimba
(Eight Hands) and Orchestra with the Czech National
Symphony Orchestra at Dvorak Hall, in Prague, The Czech
Republic, Mar. 18, 1997; and with the Chico (CA) Symphony
Orchestra, Mar. 7, 1998. On Oct. 29, 1998, James Johnston
led the Indiana University New Music Ensemble in
Toccatas
and Interludes, for flute, clarinet, violin, cello,
piano, and percussion. A Society for New Music program
featured
In Bocca del Lupo, with violinist Vladimir
Pritsker, Oct. 12, 1997 in Syracuse, NY. The Aki Festival
at the Cleveland Institute of Music will include
EDGES,
with the Case Western Reserve Wind Ensemble, conducted
by Gary Ciepluch, Mar. 28, 1999.
