Annual American Composers Update
Karel Husa
SAI National Arts Associate Karel Husa spends May through
Oct. in Ithaca, NY and Nov. through Apr. in Ponce Inlet,
FL. Recently, he has been the featured composer at festivals
at the universities of Arkansas, Missouri (Kansas City),
Indiana, Toledo, and Youngstown, and with the Arapahoe
Philharmonic.
Premieres
The European premiere of
Apotheosis of this Earth
occurred at Festival Concentus Moraviae, in the Czech
Republic, with the Janacek Philharmonic, L. Svarovsky,
conductor, and the Moravian Chorus, June 30, 1998.
Performances
: In 1998,
Music for Prague 1968 had performances
with visiting orchestras and wind ensembles in Prague,
Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava, and Brno (June-July); and
with the University of Wisconsin orchestra in Prague's
Smetana Hall, to celebrate Charles University's 650th
anniversary.
Concertino was heard at Indiana University,
at the CMI conference in Kansas City, at the Sonneck/CBDNA
conference at the University of Arkansas, and at the Hartwick
College Summer Festival.
Les Couleurs Fauves was
played by wind ensembles at the Cincinnati College Concervatory,
Kent State University, the University of Washington, California
State University at Northridge, the Ohio State Education
Conference, and the Youngston University Festival, among
others. Both on its American tour and in Europe, the Brno
Chamber Orchestra presented
Four Little Pieces for
Strings. The Corigiliano Quartet performed Husa's
Pulitzer Prize-winning
String Quartet No. 3 at
the CMI Conference at Indiana University and in Yellow
Springs, OH.
