Leslie Bassett
Leslie Bassett lives in Ann Arbor, MI, where he is the
Albert A. Stanley Distinguished University Professor Emeritus
of Music at the University of Michigan. In 1998, he appeared
as guest composer, including many performances of his
music, at Furman University, in Greenville, SC (Feb. 12-15);
the University of Colorado (Mar. 10-18); and Sam Houston
State University. (Apr. 1-4).
Premieres
Performers at Furman University gave the premiere of
Equale,
for four trombones, Feb. 15, 1998.
Performances
On Oct. 10, 1998, the Bowling Green State University Orchestra,
under Brad Blake, played
Thoughts that Sing, Breathe
and Burn at the New Music Festival. Works heard in
Ann Arbor in 1998 included
Sounds Shapes and Symbols,
with the University of Michigan Symphony Band, H. Robert
Reynolds, conductor (Oct. 9);
Salute, with 30 trumpeters
at Clifford Lillya's Memorial Concert (Aug. 9); and
Arias,
with clarinettist Carey Bell and pianist Soon Young Oh
(Apr. 16). In 1998,
Colors and Contours, for band,
was performed at Florida International University, in
Miami (Feb. 12); and at the University of North Texas,
in Denton (Feb. 6 and Mar. 5). Violinist Megan Reiter
and pianist Howard Watkins presented
Sounds Remembered
in Ann Arbor, Mar. 1, 1998, and then at the Manhattan
(NY) School of Music, Mar. 14, 1998. 1998 performances
of
Lullaby, for band, occurred at the University
of North Texas (Feb. 26 and Mar. 5); at Sam Houston State
University (Apr. 4); and at Lawrence University, Appleton,
WI (May 22).
