Annual American Composers Update
Michael Mauldin
Michael Mauldin lives and works in
Albuquerque, NM, where he teaches piano and composition
and directs the Albuquerque Boy Choir, three choirs
of boys between ages 7 and 16. In 1998, under the
composer's direction, the Concert Choir of the Albuquerque
Boy Choir, premiered his 4-part arrangement of Handel's
Oh Had I Jubal's Lyre at the Greater Southwest
Music Festival, in Amarillo, TX (May 2); the full
choir presented his arrangement of Simple Gifts
and Oh Had I Jubal's Lyre in Gloucester (England)
Cathedral (June 17); and the Symphony Orchestra of
Albuquerque, directed by Mauldin, the Albuquerque
Boy Choir, and the Albuquerque Girl Choir sang his
arrangement of portions of the Vivaldi Gloria
(Oct. 17-18).
Premieres
On Mar. 14, 1998 at the United Church
of Los Alamos, and Mar. 15, 1998 at Santa Maria de
la Paz Church, in Santa Fe, the Sangre de Cristo Chorale,
conducted by Sheldon Kalberg and accompanied by pianist
Cindy Little, gave the premiere performance of Mauldin's
Kyrie and Gloria Laudamus Te, commissioned
by the group in honor of its 20th anniversary. The
Albuquerque Boy Choir, directed by the composer, presented
Come Holy Spirit, based on the plainsong chant
Veni Creator Spiritus, at the group's Fall
Concert, Nov. 7, 1998 at Redeemer Lutheran Church
in Albuquerque.
Performances
The Symphony Orchestra of Albuquerque,
under the composer's direction, performed his Llanos
at Heights Presbyterian Church, Feb. 8, 1998. During
his benefit recital, Apr. 18, 1998 at the University
of New Mexico, for the Albuquerque Boy Choir, pianist
Lawrence Blind played Mauldin's sonata Bird at
the Great Kiva and used Souvenir of a Russian
Journey as an encore. Mauldin's Birds in Winter:
Six Preludes for Harp, a required work for the
USA International Harp Competition, was heard a number
of times during the competition, held July 4-14, 1998
in Bloomington, IN. The Symphony Orchestra of Albuquerque,
directed by Mauldin, played High Places, Oct.
17-18, 1998.
