Annual American Composers Update

Roger C. Vogel

Roger C. Vogel resides in Athens, GA, where he serves as Professor of Music in theory and composition at the University of Georgia. The University has awarded him a Senior Faculty Research Grant to record a CD of his works, featuring his choral song cycle Cats and Bats and Things with Wings.

Premieres

On Nov. 6, 1997, Twin Moons was introduced by Ronald Waln, flute, and Theodore Jahn, clarinet, at the University of Georgia. 1998 premieres at the University of Georgia included Eine Kleine Snailmusik, with Ellen Edwards, voice; Patrick Hoffman, trumpet; David Starkweather, cello; and Vogel, piano (Mar. 12); and The Frog, He Fly . . . Almost, with Edwards, voice, and Hoffman, trumpet (June 5).

Performances

Massimo Pezzuti, baritone; Milton Masciadri, bass viol; and Angiolina Sensale, piano, performed "Of Celebration", from The Devil's Songbook, on the Concerto del Casino Concert Series in Voghera, Italy, Mar. 26, 1997. On Mar. 27, 1998, Eine Kleine Snailmusik was heard with Edwards, voice; Edward Sandor, trumpet; Ashley Sandor, cello; and Vogel, piano, at the Southeastern Composers League Forum held at the University of North Carolina, in Charlotte. The College Music Society Southern Chapter Conference, at the State University of West Georgia, Feb. 27, 1998, included Winter Sun, with flutist Dennette Derby-McDermott and guitarist Mark Francis. Levon Ambartsumian played Fantasy for Solo Violin on the Franklin College Chamber Music Series at the University of Georgia, Jan. 10, 1998. Heard Feb. 12, 1998 with the Smoky Mountain Chamber Players was Night Winds, at the University of Tennessee, in Knoxville.
