Annual American Composers Update

M. William Karlins

SAI National Arts Associate M. William Karlins, on the faculty of Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL, lives in Northbrook, IL. Information about his music is available through the Garlic Press. In 1998, he received an Artists Fellowship Award from the Illinois Arts Council. At the Stefan Wolpe Festival at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, Mar. 19-22, 1998, he served on two panels, "Wolpe Students with Experience in both Jazz and New Music," and "Reminiscences of Wolpe, the Man and the Teacher."

Performances

The Stepan Wolpe Festival included performances of Music for Tenor Saxophone and Piano and Quartet No. 1, with the Temple University Saxophone Quartet and pianist Charles Abramovic, Mar. 19, 1998. In 1998, the North American Saxophone Alliance, held at Northwestern University, featured Nostalgie, for 12 saxophones, played by prominent saxophonists (Mar. 26); Impromptu, for alto saxophone and organ, with Paul Bro and Terry Spina (Mar. 27); and Music for Tenor Saxophone and Piano, with Craig Beery and Yoko Yamada-Selvaggio (Mar. 28). Roland Dowdy, alto saxophone, played Seasons, for solo saxophone, at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA, Apr. 5, 1998. Sponsored by the Fulbright Commission, an American Culture Center program presented String Trio, Drei Kleine Cembalostücke, Song for Soprano, Alto Flute, and Cello, and String Quartet with Voice, Sept. 27, 1998 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
